8. Labuan Bird Park

Hi everyone, thank you for supporting me till this last post about the interesting places in Labuan. Your patience and support that really keep me continue on writing blog. Thanks.

For this last post, I want to introduce you with the most nature place in Labuan, The Labuan Bird Park. This place are so beautiful yet a little bit far from the city. This park located at Bukit Kubong. If you not sure about my information you can also go to google map to find the exact location of it. Trust me is you new to this island, this park a little tricky to be find so I suggest you to take taxi or grab instead of go there by yourself. For your additional information this park have it entrance fee. The way I see, this fee actually reasonable because for adult only RM 3 and children only RM 1, there also have some great offers for students and senior citizen. However, if you are from outside of Malaysia the fee become RM 5 but no worries because the money exchange from other country to Malaysia is quite nice, $1 there almost equals to RM 5.
Lets we get back to business, "why should I visit this place?". good question. For people that are not from Malaysia, they are not really expose to nature so much as we do. With only the great building view in their country this place might give you the feels of nature again. From the most easiest species to find to the hardest this place has what it calls as life. This place has more than 25 exotic species and some here are rarely be found nowadays. What I can say here, this park are worth your money.
Other than bird watching this park also organize some fun activities especially during celebration. So if you come here in the right time you might get an amazing offers or gift.

Thank you for supporting my blog. Your cooperation really a big help for me.

7. Labuan Peace Park

Hi everyone, morning update is here. Thank you for supporting my blog. Your view actually my goal for continuing this blog. Thanks.

As the people who lives here, this place never stop be in people' mouths. Peace Park, one of the most historical place other than the Labuan Cemetery. Peace Park or locally known as Taman Damai was built to commemorate the fallen soldiers whom fought in Borneo Island and its surrounding waters during the World War  This park also mark as a symbol or prayer to world peace with hopes of building a better relationship and prosperity between two countries, that are Malaysia and Japan.
The park construction was completed with the collaboration from Malaysian Government, Sabah State, Labuan Corporation and Japan Government. The park construction was finalized with contributions from Japan Shipbuilding Industry Foundation and from the support of the fallen’s families,  comrades and industrial firms. For a little historical lesson, 10 June 1945 an Australian assault force commenced landing at Labuan Island’s Victoria Harbor. Supported by the naval gunfire, mortars and artillery the Australians met no resistance as they came ashore on a strip of sand code-named ‘Brown Beach’. The Battalion suffered just a handful of casualties in occupying the airfield and a company of the 2/28th battalion were similarly successful in taking the town of Labuan. But elsewhere Australian units found themselves engaged in heavy fighting.
Australian tanks and infantry engaged well dug-in Japanese troops who, by 12 June, were retreating into a natural stronghold which became known as ‘the Pocket’. Within two days of the Australian landings this remained the only area of Japanese resistance on Labuan. It became the target of a fierce bombardment from land, sea and air while infantry, supported by tanks, engaged the Japanese on the ground. On 10 September 1945 the Australian Major General George Wooten accepted the unconditional surrender of Lieutenant General Masao Baba, the Supreme Japanese Commander in Borneo and Commander of the 37th Japanese Army of the Southern Area, during a surrender ceremony, held at the headquarters on the 9th Australian Division of Labuan island. Peace Park is not really so quite place because not far from it there are some restaurant nearby follow with recreation park for kids. This place not only a place to remember but also to socialize with people. This place also known by its good meals, satay. So, if you come here, I suggest you  taste it.      This is the biggest mall yet in Labuan. Even if compare this mall to the newest building named The Paragon, Ujana Kewangan still the most popular mall here. Ujana Kewangan or known as the Financial Park Complex was officially opened on 29 August 1996 by the Malaysian Prime Minister. It is located on 11 acres of prime land in the Labuan town center. It is just a walking distance from the seafront and only a few minutes drive away from the airport.
The complex is self-contained with areas for working, living, shopping, leisure and convention. It has a two-floor podium and three office towers. The podium houses 130 commercial and retail outlets, including a supermarket (Giant) and department store (Parkson Ria), boutiques and food courts. Two of the office towers are 16 stores high while the main one is 18 stores. The Main Office Tower is occupied mainly by companies involved in the offshore businesses, like banks, insurance and insurance-related companies, trust, accounting and legal firms and also support services companies. There are two condominium blocks in the complex. They are the Alpha and Beta Park Tower. Residential facilities available include swimming pool, gymnasium, sauna, putting green and 24-hour security.

This beautiful park was once the estate of a stately government mansion, affectionately called “bumbung 12” (twelve roofs) by the locals. It was built in 1852 as the official residence for Labuan’s first governor, Sir James Brooke, and the island’s succeeding Residents. It served as the guesthouse for many dignitaries visiting the island. The Prince of Wales, also stayed here when he visited Labuan in 1922. A corner of this park was also used by one of the Residents to raise dairy cows and produce butter at that time. A century later on 10 June 1945, the old manor together with a large section of this park was destroyed under heavy artillery bombardment by the Allied forces to liberate Labuan from Japanese occupation. This historical park was rehabilitated and developed into a recreation park by Labuan Corporation in 2001.
In here, there are more that 6 types of plants been planted here. As you enter the sign you can choose any path you want as you will see a different types of flora in each section. Here will be 9 different path, either you choose hibiscus, palm, orchids, lilies, bougainvillea, or etc the results will satisfy you.                Hard landscaping has added a skate ramp, reflexology path, gazebos, boardwalks, bridges, water features, a children's playground and a reading corner. An attractive feature is a tree house perched on the branches of a mature tree overlooking the lake. There are two lakes, one of which has a boat house. As you can see in image beside there is a bridge that across the lake that will lead you to a statue.            Not so far from the previous place, stood this very old place called Labuan War Cemetery. I know for some people that want a beautiful places to go for their vacation this is not a place they will pick. However before you jump to a decision let me convince you why this place is so cool to visit.
Labuan War Cemetery is a place that holds a history besides the body of army when Japanese invasion first came to Borneo in 1942-1945. This very place also includes those people who have perish in Sandakan Death Marches and the prisoner war. Here also sigh the Victoria Cross's hero which is Jack Mackey and Tom Derrick so the total burials are more than 3,000 but only 1,752 grave that have been recognized, this make the other 2,000 left unknown.

Now you know some of the important history that this place had. However that is not so interesting, isn't? because only a few people will come here just for historical purpose. What makes this place more popular is not because the history but the beautiful and peaceful vibe that you can not have anywhere. Who knows, maybe you might found your great great grandfather lies here in one of the peaceful place here. As for me, a person that only come to remember all the heroes, I am so happy they did what they do and let us go from the claws of war.

This very beautiful place will never be exist without cooperation with Malaysia Landscape Department, Ministry of City, Housing and Local Government Welfare and Department of Corporation Labuan.

What is Labuan?

Labuan is an island that can not be described by one word. Labuan can be many things as the island are free from all taxes that have upon all others countries in Malaysia. This island are the place for finding work, start a new life, and shopping some duty free stuff (chocolates, liquids, etc). Yes, chocolates! Labuan also known as 'Chocolate's Paradise' as the price is far more cheaper among all the countries in Malaysia.

However, this beautiful island is not so popular as Kuala Lumpur or Putrajaya only because Labuan stood beside Sabah, the very rich country that produce half of Malaysian profits. This makes everyone, yes, everyone even Malaysian people wondering about Labuan's location or even the existent itself and sometimes all the citizen will burst with laugh after they know that majority of people will say Labuan are Sabah.
